Pat and Peter are on holiday this week, so we took the
opportunity to do this old favourite. It’s
shorter than the normal Monday walk, and we had planned to spend the extra time
sitting in the sun outside the bar in the square after the walk.
The weather forecast was for possible showers after
2pm. The morning was dry but cloudy
when we started, so we were not prepared for quite heavy rain about 15 minutes
into the walk. The weather can change
very quickly at this time of year, so we decided to carry on and hope for the
best.
But the best was not to be.
Before we reached our first banana stop the rain was pouring down, we
were soaked despite our waterproofs and the path had turned into a fast flowing
stream. The next part of the walk
involved a steep climb over large rocks, and we felt it was too wet and
dangerous to continue.
This is the first Monday walk that we have abandoned having
made the decision to start. It was my
decision, but everyone agreed. By the
time we reached Benimeli the rain had stopped, though it still looked pretty
bad up at the aerials. Worst still our
bar in the square was closed. Most of
the group left for home, but five of us found an alternative bar in the
village.
When we returned to Parcent there was no sign of any rain,
and the rest of the day proved bright and sunny. We were just very unlucky that the heavy
rain arrived at just the wrong time and in just the wrong place.
Monday 14 October
We all agreed to do the same walk next week. Meet near the retirement home in Benimeli at
10am. Fingers crossed for good weather!
